TThe Sunday group run is at 8 AM, (the meeting time will change to 9 AM on Sunday October 5th) and will continue to meet at the First National Bank of Colorado (3033 Iris Ave, rear parking lot). We have PowerBar recovery drinks and muffins, cookies and cinnamon rolls from the Great Harvest Bread Co. Special thanks to our refreshment coordinators Bill Allen (ballen@boulderco.com) and John Bridges (bouldergalloway@bridgesclassicalimports.com) for their continued efforts. If you would like to help out the BRR and take a turn picking up our bakery goods or bringing the water coolers get in touch with me, Rich Castro or speak to Bill or John. Please invite fellow runners to join us for a go as you please social run any Sunday. The run travels east to the Cottonwood Trails and allows runners to choose their own routes, by doing an out and back after reaching Jay Road or the Diagonal Highway or going through Waterstone and taking 51st Street back toward Boulder.

The next First Monday of the Month BRR Social will take place at the Avery Brewing Company location to encompass the entire local Boulder running community and make it affordable to the club. The Brewery is located at 5763 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder. Avery’s big beers can be previewed on their website, www.averybrewing.com. See you all on October 6th. Sponsored by Avery Brewery Co, we will still enjoy free beers and there will be a $10 cover charge to help defray the cost of the food and it is not optional. We will keep our traditional time schedule, 5:30 to 7:00 PM.

A special thanks to all those volunteers who got involved with the large number of club activities on our calendar this summer. I trust that our group will continue to be involved in the Boulder running community and invite other runners to support the sport we all love. A big thank you to Summer Track Series meet director Dan Pierce and all the regulars that came out each Thursday to provide our area runners a very valuable service. Results for our meets are available on the BRR website.

Looking for a low key group to train with throughout the year? I lead and coach a group that meets Tuesday/Thursday at Flatiron Athletic Club at 7:00 AM. FAC does offer BRR members a nice discounted rate to join as well. They have great facilities and the trails are only 3 kilometers away from the CU track and the new cinder 800 meter loop or the South Boulder Creek Trail. You do not have to be a member of the Flatiron Athletic Club to join us. FAC also offers BRR members a punch card so they can join the group on an occasional basis and have a place to stretch and shower after the workout, contact Nick at FAC and be sure to have your BRR membership card with you. On Saturdays there is a scheduled long run from the Lefthand Trail Head parking area on Neva Rd. (one mile east of U.S. 36) and the entry road to Lake Valley Golf Course. The area offers country roads, open space trails and paved roads and plenty of hills. We are currently meeting at 7:00 AM this fall. Contact me if you have questions or want more information. You can call me at home at 303-449-6650 or e-mail Richard.Castro@colorado.edu.

Wanted to share a note I received from Jenny Barringer. As most of you know Jenny made the 2008 US Olympic in the 3000 meter steeplechase and it will be the first time the women’s steeplechase will be contested in the Olympic Games. In order to prepare for the games Jenny was scheduled to travel to Europe to compete in some meets before leaving for China with the US team later this month. At the last minute the NCAA notified CU that they were not eligible to assist with her travel expenses less they compromise her remaining collegiate eligibility (way to help developing runners NCAA). Coach Mark Wetmore and I discussed they situation and the BRR covered the required expenses and her trip was still on. We received this note from Jenny before her departure:

Rich Castro and the Boulder Road Running Family,

Thank you so much for all of your support for the Buffaloes over the years. We continue to be the number one distance program largely because of supporters like yourselves who behind the scenes ensure that the details of the program have the manpower and funding to run smoothly. I want to thank you all especially for your financial support of my racing in Europe this summer. After an exciting weekend in Eugene where I, along with several other Buffs competed and qualified for the Olympic Games, the CU coaches agreed some races between the Trials and the Games would be an important part of my preparation. With your help I traveled to Lucern, Switzerland where I raced a tough field of women in the 1500m and set a PR of 4:11, donning a BRR jersey. After that exciting success Coach Heather Burroughs and I traveled to Heusden, Belgium were I toed the line for one last steeplechase before the Games. There I ran another personal best, setting the then-American Record of 9:22.74 in a thrilling photo finish effort. Attached is a photo of myself after that meet, a new American Record holder.

After the success of my trip I went on to run two more races - the prelim and final at the Olympic Games. It was in the   final on the night of August 17th that I bettered my own American Record to a time of 9:22.26. I know that I was sharp and ready at the Games because my season of training and racing was put together so carefully and thoughtfully. Mark Wetmore knew I needed races in Europe, but that wouldn't have been possible without your support.

With the most sincere gratitude I thank you for your part in my season. Each of you own a piece of what was accomplished. It's   because of support like this that I'm so happy to be back in Boulder to once again herald Colorado colors and complete my eligibility as collegiate athlete.

Thank you, Thank you!

-Jen Barringer
